A Brief We Hadn’t Had Before
Paige and Cam came into the studio a few weeks ago with a clear idea of what they wanted: an awkward couples portrait session. Not the polished, camera-ready couple shoot we do most weeks, something deliberately over the top, a bit cringe, forced intimacy played for laughs rather than romance. We’d never shot one before.
Finding the Right Kind of Awkward
Good awkward is harder to get right than it sounds. Too subtle and it just looks like a normal couple photo. Too much and it stops being funny. We spent the session testing poses that had no real business working, holding deadpan expressions through takes that had both of them cracking up between shots, and leaning into the exact kind of forced closeness that makes you laugh the second you see it back on screen.

These are the shots Paige and Cam picked from everything we captured that day. Narrowing it down wasn’t easy, there were plenty more nearly as good sitting in the reject pile purely because we could only fit so many into one post.

Most portrait enquiries start with some version of “just get some nice photos of us.” This one came with an actual concept, and that’s exactly the kind of brief we want more of. A clear idea, even a strange one, gives us something real to build a session around, and it almost always makes for portraits people actually remember rather than ones that blend into every other couple shoot.
