“How often should I update my headshot?” is one of the questions I’m asked most, and it’s a sensible one. A headshot is a snapshot of a moment, but you go on changing — so at some point, the photo and the person stop matching. Here’s an honest guide to when it’s worth refreshing yours.
Update it when your appearance changes
The most obvious trigger is a genuine change in how you look — a new hairstyle, a different colour, glasses, a noticeable change in weight, a beard arriving or departing. Your headshot should look like the person who walks into the meeting or interview. If someone would do a slight double-take comparing your photo to you in the room, it’s time.
Update it every two to three years as a rule of thumb
Even without a dramatic change, faces age and styles shift. A photo that’s five or six years old can quietly signal “out of date” — and worse, it can read as though you’re hiding something or simply haven’t kept your professional presence current. As a general guide, every two to three years keeps you looking current without it becoming a chore.
Update it when your role or brand changes
A promotion, a new job, a rebrand, a change of industry — these are all natural moments to refresh. If you’ve moved from a casual creative role into something more corporate (or vice versa), your headshot should reflect the impression you now want to make.
The cost of an outdated photo
An old or mismatched headshot subtly undermines trust before you’ve said a word. In a world where people meet your LinkedIn photo long before they meet you, keeping it current is one of the simplest, highest-return things you can do for your professional image.
