Your headshot is often the first impression people have of you, especially in a digital world where your online presence can make or break opportunities. But headshots don’t last forever, and an outdated one can quietly work against you. Here are the clear signs it’s time for a refresh.
You no longer look like your photo
The most obvious sign: if someone would do a double-take comparing your headshot to you in person, it’s out of date. A new hairstyle or colour, glasses, a noticeable change in weight, a beard gained or lost — any meaningful change in appearance means your photo no longer does its main job, which is to represent the real you.
It’s simply old
Even without a dramatic change, time moves on. A photo that’s five or more years old can read as “out of touch” or, worse, as though you’re hiding something. Styles and standards in photography shift too, and a dated image can make even a sharp professional look behind the times.
Your role or brand has changed
A promotion, a new job, a career change or a rebrand are all natural prompts. If you’ve moved into a more senior or more formal role — or the opposite, into something more creative — your headshot should reflect the impression you now want to make.
It was never quite right
- It’s a cropped selfie or a casual snap pressed into service.
- You don’t like it — if you wince when it loads, others may sense that too.
- It’s inconsistent with your team or your other professional images.
An easy fix
If any of these ring true, updating is quick, affordable and surprisingly painless — and it pays you back in every first impression you make.
When in doubt, it’s probably time
Here’s a simple rule of thumb: if you’ve found yourself wondering whether your headshot needs updating, it almost certainly does. We tend to give ourselves the benefit of the doubt and leave a dated photo running far longer than we should. Meanwhile it’s out there making first impressions on your behalf, every day, whether it’s doing you justice or not.
As a general guide, refreshing every two to three years keeps you current without it becoming a chore — and any time a major change happens sooner, don’t wait for the calendar.
